A LIGHT IN THE DEEP

(for wind symphony)

2007 • Estimated timing: 13'30"
[Manuscript]
The composer writes, "For years, I have read articles and listened to opinions by various colleagues in the music industry that playing soft and delicate was a trait that the wind ensemble did not possess. Being a proponent of the medium, I was distraught by these comments. I hoped that a project would present itself as an opportunity to dispute such a claim. My music of late has been inspired by the beauty of nature, whether it be a landscape painting as in my Twilight in the Wilderness or the majesty of the American Bald Eagle as in my Anúnkasan, the Sky Spirit. A few years ago, I came across a book of underwater photography by National Geographic's David Doubiliet titled Light in the Sea. The grace and clarity of these photos had a lasting impression on me and immediately went into my vault of ideas for a future composition - an idea to showcase in the majority of a work, the wind ensemble's 'gentle' side. A Light in the Deep is the realization of this underwater musical journey."
